Stemmler Meats & Cheese is a family-owned business that was started by the patriarch Gerard, who was a butcher by trade, with his wife Maryann and son Kevin in 1985. The first facility was in the family garage with a retail outlet at the local farmers’ market. But within the year they were able to build a new 1,200 square foot store in Heidelberg, Ontario.
Stemmler Meats & Cheese has become known for lean cuts, quality meats sourced from local farmers and, something unique in the business at the time, cutting and processing rooms open for everyone to see. They also have taken an interest in developing products that are gluten, MSG, lactose and nitrate free. The business is currently run by brothers Kevin, Shawn and Terry with a complement of 30 employees. The matriarch of the family, Maryann Stemmler, handles the produce end of the business.
From its humble beginnings in the family garage Stemmler Meats & Cheese has grown to a facility and retail space that is more than 6,000 square feet. At the 2011 Ontario Finest Meat Competition Stemmler took home three Gold awards, one each for Corned Beef, Black Forest Ham, and Spinach and Feta Chicken Sausage. Stemmler’s Montreal Smoked Bacon was awarded Silver.
