Abate Packers, an abattoir located in Arthur, Ontario, was originally established in 1967 by Salvatore & Phyllis Abate. Bona Foods
Hoping for a better life outside of Italy, Alfredo Arnone immigrated to Canada in 1951 at age 20. He started modestly – the Arnone family garage served as the company warehouse with a family friend’s car serving as the delivery truck for many years.  More…
Brian Quinn’s Meats
It’s not uncommon to have an actual husband and wife team running a ‘mom and pop’ operation, but it is pretty rare to get the two of them in one room at the same time during a work day. It’s the nature of the business and typically all hands on deck no matter the size of the operation, or geographical location.  More…

Finest Sausage & Meat Ltd.
Finest Sausage & Meat Ltd.It was a special treat for me personally when Victoria Street Market opened just five minutes away from my home in Kitchener, as it made it super easy to stock up on award winning Finest Sausage and Meat products. The newest outlet also hosts Caudle’s Catch and Full of Beans within 5000 sq ft of retail space. The brainchild of partners Bo Gedja and Shannon Desborough, the market nicely compliments the other locations; a retail store as part of the plant on Trillium Drive, and counters at the St.Jacob’s and Kitchener Farmers’ Markets. Although a considerable size for a family operation today, it’s taken forty years of dedication and hard work to get there.  More…

Florence Meats opened its doors in 1977, on Florence Drive in Oakville. Mario Goriup, a butcher by trade, ran the small butcher shop and taught his son Damian everything he knows. Customers responded favourably to the move and business continued to grow.  More…

Norwich Packers Ltd.
A farmer walks in to an office…no it’s not the opening line of a bad joke…I was sitting with Matthew Heleniak part owner of Norwich Packers Inc. and head of procurement, and in came a beef farmer with three little ones in tow. After having done these interviews for while, it’s not uncommon to be interrupted but I get it, these people are running a business after all. So back to the farmer – he has some Angus he wants to ask Matthew about. Not 1000 or even 500, but 15 head! And it wasn’t like a sales call; “Will you buy my 15 cattle?” it was “Can you tell me how to make them the best Angus I can?” After a brief conversation, it was agreed Matthew would come out to the farm and give some advice to this man. The farmer thanked Matthew and left apologizing for the interruption even though he was assured it was not a problem.  More…
Oakridge Acres Country Meat Store
With the store not visible from the road, if not for a large sign I may have missed Oakridge Acres Country Meat Store all together. When they say this is a ‘country’ store it’s no exaggeration with the cattle and bison farm sharing the same plot of land. But that doesn’t mean this retail outlet wouldn’t rival any found in more urban areas. In fact, up to 15% of Oakridge’s customer base travels from Toronto with coolers in the trunk to stock up on beef, omega-3 chicken, pork, lamb, turkey, bison, and wild boar. The remaining customer base mostly comes from London, Brantford, Elmira, and the tri-city area.  More…
Salumeria Il Tagliere
You have to hand it to the Italians. Who else could translate ‘salami on a cutting board’ into such a beautiful sounding name as Salumeria Il Tagliere? You have to say it correctly though for full effect, as we quickly learned butchering it (pun intended), several times in fact, at the Ontario Finest Meat Competition™ awards gala.  More…

Tim Schinkel’s father and uncle opened their first butcher shop in Essex in 1963. Thirty years later, in 1993, Tim took a small processing operation in the back of the family’s Chatham store and turned it into a thriving business – Schinkel’s Legacy.  More...
Seed to Sausage
It’s literally in the middle of nowhere. On Road 38 between Sharbot Lake and Tichborne, seventy kilometres north of Kingston, Ontario. But it’s there, a fully operational plant fronted by a charming retail space, producing product rivaling that of any found in larger, urban centres. And as if attesting the fact, the walls are lined with articles in publications like Clean Eating, Oxygen, and Herd magazines, the Ottawa Citizen daily, posts from bloggers The Gouda Life and foodiePrints, stretching from Kingston to Frontenac to Ottawa.

Sikorski Sausages
Sitting across from such a seemingly young man, politically correct or not, I had to ask – just how old ARE you? And although relatively young at age 29, Peter Sikorski, Managing Director of Sikorski Sausages Co. Ltd., is no kid – he knows how to make premium, high-end Polish meat and poultry products. Proof positive would be the three Platinum, two Gold, and one Silver award, Sikorski recently brought home from the 2013 Ontario Finest Meat Competition.

Vik’s Country Meats
Viktor Laciok opened his quiet country meat store in December of 1977. He already had a reputation, among his friends and neighbours, for producing delicious Polish kielbasa and sausage. Everything was made the traditional way: starting with lean quality meat, seasoned with spices and then smoked to perfection in a smokehouse Vik constructed himself. A year later Vik’s son, Richard, joined the business.  More…
